Celebrating the life of
William (Billy) Byerly
December 12, 1953 - February 08, 2026
“Don’t grieve for me, for now I am free. I’m following the path God laid for me. I took God’s hand when I heard the call; I turned my back and left it all. If my parting has left a void, fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. For yes, these things, I too, will miss. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief; don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your head and share with me, God wanted me now, God set me free.”
William “Billy” Byerly was called home on February 8th after a brief battle with a chronic illness. He goes to be reunited with the love of his life, carrying with him memories of a beautiful life shared together. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is once again in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, free from pain and at peace. Billy was 72 years young. A devoted member of St. James the Less Catholic Church, he dedicated his life to serving others and living his faith.
Billy was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia. Before retiring, he spent his career as an electrician, working in many plants throughout Savannah and southeast Georgia. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 508 for most of his career. More than anything, Billy loved cutting up, sharing laughs, and talking through life with “the boys at work.”
Billy was known for his strong will, which he instilled in his daughters. Billy loved “his girls” (daughters). Though he did not have any sons, he always pushed “his girls” to be strong and tough and would always say “you can do anything a man can do if you put your mind to it. If you put your mind to it, there is nothing that you can’t do.” He always encouraged them to keep pushing, because the sky is the limit. His love and encouragement inspired them to pursue their dreams and gave them the confidence to overcome challenges.
After retirement, Billy started his favorite role yet – that of a grandparent. Known to his grandchildren as Grandaddy or Grandy, he treasured every moment spent with them. He enjoyed spending time crabbing, fishing, and being out on the water with the family.
Billy was the beloved son of Dorothy Byerly and the late Joseph Byerly, and the beloved husband of the late Linda Byerly. He is survived by his daughters, Crystal (Kenny) Harvey of Savannah, GA and Amanda (Brian) Wiederhold of Savannah, GA. His legacy lives on through his three precious grandchildren, Olvia Wiederhold, Ardyn Harvey, and Jackson Wiederhold. He is also survived by his sister Janet (Ray) Nickens; his brothers James (Anne) Byerly and Anthony Byerly; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
